Ocean Oasis, a new giant-screen film, is a fascinating journey into the bountiful seas and pristine deserts of two remarkably different, but inextricably linked worlds — Mexico's Sea of Cortés and the Baja California desert.
"A few very special places in the world are havens for life. Resources and shelter draw living creatures from far and near. These places are rare. We call them oases."
What powerful geologic forces collided to carve out this unique region? What drives the strong currents that make this ocean so unusually rich in nutrients? How does life thrive in a seemingly barren landscape? Ocean Oasis mesmerizes us with revealing and memorable scenes that explore these mysteries.
Glide side-by-side with a graceful giant manta ray as it arches and swoops through water sparkling under the hot Baja California sun. Witness the pageant of migrating whales, the elaborate tango of courting terns, the battles of lumbering elephant seals. Fly over sweeping vistas of snow-capped mountains, vast deserts, palm oases, and mangrove swamps — then plunge into astonishing underwater sequences of rarely seen marine life.
In the making of this extraordinary film, a team of gifted and dedicated scientists explored unknown territories, sometimes at great personal risk. They trekked, flew, and dove to unveil intriguing secrets of isolated areas on land, in the air, and beneath the sea. Now audiences who would never otherwise see these remote wildernesses can experience their captivating beauty and elusive wildlife.
Ocean Oasis is both visually stunning and provocative, compelling in its message that this little-known region is a treasure worth preserving.
Proceeds from Ocean Oasis will support conservation, education, and research in the Baja California peninsula and the Sea of Cortés.
an intimate introduction to Michael Jordan, the basketball superstar who led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships. Michael Jordan to the Max, a 45-minute giant-screen portrait of this larger-than-life hero, will open to the public at The Science Place on Saturday, March 9, 2003.
Michael Jordan to the Max, the first IMAX film to exclusively feature an individual, celebrates the personal attributes that have made Jordan more than a basketball champion, but also a hero who transcends borders, cultures, age and gender.
“Our goal was to create an inspirational portrait of a champion whose athletic achievements could not have resulted from talent alone—but instead stemmed from a combination of athletic ability, discipline, determination, teamwork and a true love of the game,” said Jim Stern, co-director and co-producer of the film.
Following Jordan’s final championship run with the Chicago Bulls, the film uses the incredible visual and sound capabilities of the IMAX motion-picture format to take viewers on-court with Jordan as he demonstrates his ability to defy gravity—and adversity. The film chronicles the 1998 playoffs, beginning with Jordan’s struggles during the Indiana Pacers series, including the critical missed shot in Game 5 and his trip-and-fall in Game 6. It addresses his unwavering confidence throughout the Utah Jazz series and captures him hitting the final, last-minute basket in Game 7, securing the sixth NBA championship for the Bulls—and a storybook ending to his professional basketball career.
Complementing these larger-than-life basketball sequences, in which viewers will feel as if they are literally “in the picture,” are scenes featuring Jordan and those closest to him, as they provide an intimate look into the tragedies and triumphs that have shaped Jordan as an athlete and an individual. These span Jordan’s life, from being cut from the Laney High School varsity basketball team, to his “breakthrough” as a freshman playing for the University of North Carolina, and from his rise to basketball star and global marketing icon, to his first retirement. Further, they explore Jordan’s transition from basketball champion to minor league baseball player with the Burmingham Barons, his much-awaited return to the NBA and his current retirement, in which he spends time volunteering at the Michael Jordan Basketball Camp for kids.
“Michael Jordan to the Max covers not only ‘the big picture,’ of Michael Jordan—the surface stories—but also includes rare glimpses, shared by Michael and others, into the character traits that have enabled him to achieve his potential, both on and off the court,” said Don Kempf, co-director and co-producer of the film.

Want to ride down Central Expressway at 700 miles per hour? Want to see the view from the top of Reunion Tower? Want to see "Big D" on the big screen as you've never seen it before? Whether you're a fifth-generation Dallasite or a newcomer, The Science Place's signature film will offer you a new perspective of the city.
Since opening day, November 15, 1996, The Science Place's TI Founders IMAX Theater has shown this presentation, the six minute film, "Dallas: A Unique Place in Time." This signature film was directed by local award-winning filimmaker, Phillip Thomas, and is sponsored by Texas Instruments (TI).
The short film marks the first time the city of Dallas has been captured in the large-format (70 mm expanded) medium of IMAX. Phillip Thomas and his crew shot locations in and around Dallas during the month of April 1996.
The film opens with a brief history of invention and moves on to explain how the inventions and technology born in Dallas have shaped the city and the world. The director's famous time-lapse footage of the Dallas skyline is inter-cut with dramatic scenes of the Arboretum in bloom, construction cranes over the horizon and a high-speed shot of the Reunion Hotel lobby from a descending elevator. In closing, the film acknowledges the four TI founders, for whom the theater is named: Cecil H. Green, J. Erik Jonnson, Eugene McDermott and Patrick E. Haggerty.
Original music by John Hunter and Jon Slott, of Dallas-based Juniper Music, will underscore the onscreen action. This film is planned for a five-year minimum run.
